Chart Your Course Toward Membership

Freemasonry is not something a man is recruited into. It is a path he chooses for himself.

At Grand Haven Lodge No. 139, the journey starts with conversation, honest questions, and getting to know one another over time.

The sections below outline local expectations, membership qualifications, and the joining process so you can take the next step with confidence.

Requirements

  • Spend time with members before petitioning. Our lodge expects at least 6 meetings, such as dinners, social events, or informal conversations.
  • Ask questions and learn what lodge life includes: fellowship, education, service, and personal responsibility.
  • When you are ready and acting by your own free will and accord, request a petition.

Qualifications

  • Be a male at least 18 years of age (minimum age can vary by jurisdiction, sometimes up to 21).
  • Believe in the existence of a Supreme Being. Freemasonry is not a religion and is not concerned with theological distinctions or particular religious beliefs.
  • Be of good moral character.

Step 2

Visit, Talk, And Learn

Step 3

Submit A Petition

When you are ready, submit a formal petition. Initiation fees vary by lodge, and local costs are explained during the process.

Step 4

Investigation Committee Meeting

After petition submission, an investigation committee of about 3 members meets with you to answer final questions and learn more about you.

Step 5

Petition Wait, Vote, And Initiation

Your petition typically sits for about one month before lodge vote. Upon a favorable vote, you are scheduled for your first degree: Entered Apprentice.

Process details can vary by jurisdiction and lodge practice. We will walk you through each step clearly.
